I always felt that Wonka is presented in the first film… and even
almost in the book… he has magic. He goes to magic lands… he is does
the impossible, he is like a God right? And in this new film, they
kinda hint at the idea that he knows the outcome already… that he knows
what is to be, which kid will win… Even in the intro… they kinda make
it like Charlie is pre-ordained… that all his suffering is not in vain,
he will… be saved. It is in the cards. It is very Christ like to me…
Wonka knows Charlie is his son, that's why it works better in the first
version of the film that there is no father present.

JT LeRoy talks about Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
versus the old Gene Wilder version, and sees sin, betrayal and
redemption replaced by a Bush-valued Charlie Buckett and a
man/child-like (dare we say it, Michael Jackson) Willy Wonka.

Turns out - despite rating Johnny Depp's performance - he prefers
Deadwood.
